Japanese scary fairy tale
The wife who didn’t eat anything
A long time ago, a poor man lived in one area. He couldn’t find a wife.
«Since I am poor, I cannot afford a wife to feed. It would be nice to get a bride who doesn’t eat anything at all,» this man thought. And a few days later, a beautiful girl knocked on his door.
— I don’t eat anything and at the same time I work hard. Please take me as your wife.
The man thought: «Great » — and married her. His wife really didn’t eat anything at all. He even tested her by saying such words.
— Try, eat at least a little.
«Just the smell is enough for me,» the woman replied and flatly refused to eat.
However, despite this, the rice from the sheaves quickly disappeared. When the man told his friend about this, he was amazed.
— Don’t you still notice anything?! Your wife is not a human!
Therefore, one day the husband, said that he was going to the city, left the house and stealthily, so that his wife would not notice, went back, sneaked into the attic and began to watch from there.
Left alone, the woman began threshing rice. She quickly lit a fire, cooked Sansho rice and made thirty-three large nigiri. And after that, she also fried three mackerels. His wife’s hair was disheveled, and instead of a face — was only a wide-open mouth. Into this mouth the woman quickly sent nigiris and mackerels.
Seriously frightened, the man went down from the attic and jumped out into the street. By the evening he returned home, and his wife was already in bed. She said she had a stomach ache.
«That’s probably because you ate Sansho rice and three whole mackerels,» said her husband.
— So, you saw everything! — saying that, the witch assumed her true form.
And then she pushed the man into a barrel and, putting it on her back, she ran into the mountains. The man noticed the branches of trees growing along the road, and at the right moment he grabbed one of the branches. The witch, not noticing anything, continued to run quickly. The man was hiding in the thickets of wormwood and calamus when the witch returned.
— Yeah! He have to be here somewhere … where could he hide so that I missed him? — with these words, she almost overtook the fugitive, but, noticing the leaves of the wormwood and calamus, she shied away from the thickets in fright.
— Oh, how annoying! If it weren’t for wormwood and calamus, I would have already grabbed you and eat you. But if the mountain witch touches those leaves, her body will melt instantly!
Hearing this, the man hurriedly began to throw those leaves at the witch. Then her body began to melt quickly, and eventually she completely disappeared.
(Kuwadzu nyobō)
